My dear Mr. Long
I appreciate greatly your letter of the fourth, clarifying the
circumstances of the resolution I received from Mr. Farley. Your ro-
assurance was gratifying and encouraging to me.
My part in the incident at Three Rivers was small. I felt it
was certainly my duty to do what I could to see that Felix Longoria
received the decent, Christian, American burial to which he was en-
titled.
Let me assure you that my action was taken without regard to
any political implications whatsoever and it certainly was not my in-
tention to cast any reflection upon the community of Three Rivers or
the State of Texas. On the other hand, I was attempting to arrive
at a solution of the problem which would prevent that very thing
from happening. I of course regret as much as anyone the notoriety
which has attended the incident there, and I assure you that it
was not brought about through any actions of mine. The publicity
which was given to the matter originated solely in Texas and was
something over which I had no control.
It was thoughtful of you to write as you did. If ever I
may be of service to you or your Council or any members of the Legion
in Bexar County, please do not hesitate to call on me. I will be
truly happy to go to bat for you or your membership whenever I can
do 80.
With my warm regarda and deep gratitude, I am
Sincerely,
Lyndon B. Johnson
