He pointed out that of course the Mexican government officially could take no position in the matter since Felix Longoria was an American citisen, but that that wasn't the point at allennot what they said officially but how they folt unofficially would more often than not affect our relations with them. On several occasions he told me that although the Meocioan State Department could talce no official action on the natter that if we could for us to impress upon Dr. Garcia of the Ooed Neighbor Commission or upon the fanily that the state Department was interested in seeing the funoral held in Arlington becaupe of the salutary effect it would have on the whole matter. In every conversation we had with Mr. Reveley, he was extreuely complimentary of the action talcen by the Senator and said he folt though that the problem was nuch larger than a personal one between Mra. Longoria and the town of Three it had become an international incident, which we should wateh very carefully in order that our relations with Mexico not be hindered. Mr. Reveley was at the funeral, along with irr. Sierra, First Secretary of the Mexican Embassy, with a Mexican Army Official and a Mexican Naval official attached to the Timbassy, who brought a huge wreath from the Anbassador. Also present at the faneral wa Major Oeneral Harry Vaughn, Aide to the President of the United States, who had called Senator Johnson on his own initiativo stating that he wished to be present at the burial representing the President of the United States and ask that we keep hin informed as to the date, to. Yesterday, February 214, I talicod to Mr. Reveloy again, who was very interested in the impending investigation in the Taxas legislature. He had received a clipping about 1b. I asiced him at that time whother or not the incident had delayed, stopped or interrupted our negotiations on the Agroement" with Maxico. He said, *Wait a talk to one of the nen who was in Mexico negotiating the agreement" (I believe his name is Wilson). Mr. Reveley came back to the phone and he Baid that he could not say that the incident had delayed, interrupted or stopped our negotiations but that notwith- standing the arrangements which had been made for the burial the incident had naturally *complicated" the nagotiations. de went on to say that if the arrangenents which vere made for the burial had not been mada then the anawer to my question might be entiroly different. He and fortunately that the arrangements to bury Folix Longoria in Arlington Cemetery had a most salutary effect on the whole incident and that those arrangements had been published (as a result of his talk to Ambassador Thurston and Ambassador De La Colino's talk to his linister of State) in the Mestican newrepapers before the negotiations had begun.
