COPY I released no statements on the matter and said nothing further until tventy-four hours later when I learned that statements had been issued in Texas and the funeral home had said that "I never conducted a funeral of this kind and there is trouble in the family." My position on this matter all along has been not to engage in an argument with the Chamber of Commeros, the local banker, or any other people vho have interested then- solves in what I consider a purely private mattor for the family. I have said to the family time and time again, and to all who have contacted mo, that the soldier would be buried whore his next of kin desired, and nothing I have said or done has been in criticism of any individual. The time has not yet cone, hovever, when I as a member of the United States Senate will refuse to furnish a constituent information he is entitled to or will be afraid to assist a widov of a veteran in having that veteran buried wherever she may choose. I regres, as you do, all the criticism that has resulted and all the interference that has Saken place, but I fool that no just criticism can be made of the fact that I replied to a wire and only gave information that any service man or his family is entitled to. Sincerely Lyndon B. Johnson [4 of 18]
