"In the 19th century, soldiers discharged from the Regular Army received a discharge certificate that became their personal property; the War Department generally did not retain a copy for its own records. If the soldier was owed pay and other amounts upon his discharge, the soldier presented the discharge to the paymaster in order to collect that money. Words and numbers written on the reverse side of this discharge certificate indicates its use in this manner. The National Archives accepted this donated item as an example of the type of discharge paper (discharge certificate) used around 1870."
