25 February 1971
Subject: Operation LAMSON 719
1. (U) General: This report covers the period 240800-
242200 GMT (241600-250600 Saigon time, 240300-241700 EST)
February 1971. The information herein is based on available
combat reports and will be revised upon receipt of more
complete information.
2. (TS) Summary of Current Operations:
a. General Situation: There was only one significant
combat acion reported during the reporting period. The
Quang Tri Combat Base received eight rounds of 122-mm
rocket fire. Two US batteries fired 63 rounds of 175 mm
at suspected locations, however, there was no damage to
the friendly installation. RVNAF accomplished resupply
missions as planned. Weather delayed combat assaults and
other lifts, and then hostile fire at Metro (near Hotel 2)
and Hotel 2 landing zones caused further delays.
b. Significant Combat Action Reported: At point 1 the
1/1 Infantry Battalion contacted an unknown-size enemy
force. Ten enemy soldiers were killed. One ARVN soldier
was wounded. Three AK-47s were captured.
C. Progress of Friendly Forces in Achieving Objectives:
(1) Night patrols and ambushes were conducted in
the vicinity of night defensive positions and fire
support bases during darkness. The 3d Brigade, 101st
Airborne Division completed its move to Dong Ha by
vehicle at 240600 EST without incident. Some time was
lost to the operations due to morning fog and midafter-
noon clouding.
(2) Engineer effort on road construction and maintenance
continued on QL 9 and HL 556. Ten acres of land has
been cleared in the vicinity of 1 mile northwest of La
Bao. The final emplacement of AM 2 matting at the old
strip at Khe Sanh scheduled for completion on 28 Feb-
ruary remains firm. Peneprime (7,600 gallons) has been
distributed on helopads at Khe Sanh.
3. (S) Remarks:
a. RVNAF troop strength in Laos for this operation is
10,104.

INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM
Major Deployments of Communist Combat Units
in South Laos, Southern North Victnam and
South Vietnam's Military Region 1 Since
1 February 1971
Overall Deployment of Forces
1. As of 1 February, there were within south Laos
an estimated 22,000 NVA combat troops, * of which about
11,000 were deployed within the environs of Tchepone.
To bolster this force the North Vietnamese could draw
upon sizeable numbers of troops deployed in North
Vietnam (between Vinh and the DMZ) or in South Vietnam's
Military Region 1 (MR 1). On 1 February there were
nearly 40,000 NVA combat forces located in North Vietnam
south of Vinh and nearly 19,000 NVA and VC combat troops
in MR 1. (See Table 1) Since 1 February a number of
major unit deployments have occurred which significantly
alter the picture of Communist forces operating in
*This analysis excludes consideration of Pathet Lao
combat forces deployed throughout south Laos. The term
combat force, as used in this memorandum, excludes AAA units.

the Lam Son 719 operational area or quickly available
for reinforcing it. These deployments are believed
to be a direct reaction to the Lam Son 719 operation
against the logistic complex in the Tchepone area.
South Laos
2. Since 1 February our estimate of the NVA
combat force in south Laos has been increased by more
than 17,500 troops, some 14,500 from North Vietnam,
2,700 from South Vietnam, and about 500 from two newly
identified combat battalions believed to have been
in the area for sometime.* This augmentation involved
the deployment to Laos of seven regiments from North
and South Vietnam as follows:
From North Vietnam

In addition, there are indications that another regiment
from North Vietnam -- the 9th Regiment/304th Division --
may be deploying to Laos.
25X1
4. The recent deployments to south Laos raise the
total NVA combat force there to nearly 40,000 troops.
Some 28,700 of these troops are deployed in the Lam Son
719 operational area. * (A listing of these forces is
shown in Table 2. The total number of Communist forces
in all of Laos by function is given in Table 3.)
North Vietnam
5. In addition to deploying an estimated 14,500
troops from North Vietnam to South Laos, Hanoi undertook
other significant redeployments which radically altered
its troop strength between Vinh and the DMZ. During
The Lam Son 719 operational area may be regarded
generally as that part of south Laos containing Base
Areas 604 and 611. It excludes the eastern part of
Base Area 611 which is in South Vietnam and contains
on the order of 3,500 enemy combat troops.

February some 5,000 troops of the 95th and 101st Regiments,
325th Division, appear to have moved north from southern
Nghe An Province near Vinh to an area above Thanh Hoa
Province. As a result of this movement, these units
are no longer considered as part of the immediate enemy
threat for reinforcing Communist forces in Laos. More-
over, major elements of the 38th Artillery Regiment
which had been in northern Quang Binh Province in North
Vietnam, have now relocated to Quang Tri Province in
South Vietnam. The combined strength of these elements
is probably on the order of 800-1,000 men. The net
effect of the deployment of all of these units out of
the area between Vinh and the DMZ was to reduce the
number of combat forces in this part of North Vietnam
from nearly 40,000 to about 20,000 troops.
South Vietnam, MR 1
6. The deployment of elements of the 38th Artillery
Regiment to South Vietnam and the shift of the 29th
and 812th Regiments of the 324B Division to Laos resulted
in a reduction of the combat force in MR 1 from 19,000
to about 17,000 men.

1. (U) General: This report covers the period 092200-
100800 GMT March (100600-101600 March Saigon time, 091700-
100300 EST March) 1971. The information herein is based on
available combat reports and will be revised upon receipt of
more complete information.
2. (S) Summary of Current Operations:
a. General Situation:
(1) The 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) continued
operations in northern Quang Tri Province providing
security for Route 9 and critical installations. In the
3d Airborne Brigade area, two convoys (one US, one ARVN)
were attacked with no casualties or damage to the US con-
voy while the ARVN convoy had one ARVN soldier wounded
and two ton trucks damaged. Vandorgrift was struck
with approximately 28 122-mm rockets; one US soldier was
killed and one was wounded. Elements of the 1st Brigade,
5th Division (Mech), had a contact with an enemy force
which resulted in one US soldier wounded. One 175-min
artillory piece moving to FSB Phu Loc was attacked with
eight rounds of indirect fire. There were no casualties
and no damage to the piece.
(2) RVNAF units in Laos continued search operations
for enemy caches. In addition to the attack reported in
paragraph 2b (1) below, five attacks by fire (four mortar,
one antitank grenade) resulted in one ARVN soldier killed
and 10 wounded. One truck was damaged.
b. Significant Combat Actions Reported:
(1) At Point 1, FSB Sophia received an indirect fire
attack with 120 rounds of mixed 82-mm mortar and 122-mm
rockets. Thirteen ARVN soldiers were wounded and six
105-mm howitzers were damaged.
(2) At Point 2, in the area of an ARC LIGHT strike,
the 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, reported find-
ing the bodies of 144 enemy soldiers. In the same area,
100 122-mm rockets, 44 AK-47s, four trucks, two 37-mm
machine guns, and one tank (type not identified) were
destroyed. This is an initial report and the results are
not included in reported operational results.
(3) At Point 3, the 1st VNMC Battalion was attacked by
an enemy force. Fifteen enemy soldiers were killed and
seven individual weapons were captured.

C. Progress of Friendly Forces in Achieving Objectives:
(1) 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) and units
under its operational control were unable to conduct air-
mobile operations due to the adverse weather conditions.
which prevailed throughout the division's assigned area.
(2) The 2d Battalion, 1st Airborne Brigade, reported
reaching objective Bravo (see attachment 1) with no sig-
nificant contacts with enemy forces.
(3) Tactical air elements continued support throughout
the reporting period.
(4) RVNAF units continued search operations as they
moved toward assigned objectives. The 4th Battalion,
1st Infantry Regiment, has not reported cutting Route
915.
(5) Air Operations: Adverse weather conditions,
principally fog at Khe Sanh, precluded scheduled heli-
copter operations. The weather in Laos improved during
the day and tactical airstrikes were flown under FAC
control.
(6) Engineer Effort: Work continued on roads and air
facilities.
(7) Logistics: The foggy conditions at Khe Sanh pre-
vented C-130 operations; however, 415 tons of supplies
wore delivered by truck.
3. (S) Remarks:

This document has been reviewed pursuant to Executive Order 13526 and has been determined to be declassified.
TALKED TO ABRAMS THIS MORNING,
GENERAL WEYAND WAS IN MILITARY REGION ONE YESTERDAY CHECKING ON THE
PROGRESS OF THE LAMSON OPERATION.
ABRAMS SAYS TODAY HAS BEEN THE BEST DAY OF THE OPERATION SO FAR,
THE ARVN MORALE IS HIGH, ALL OF THE SCHEDULED MOVES WENT OFF WITHOUT
A HITCH, THERE WERE CONTACTS BUT THE RESULTS WERE GOOD. LAM IS IN
GOOD SHAPE - HE IS TOUGH, DETERMINED, CAREFUL AND HIS SPIRITS ARE
GOOD. GENERAL DONG, THE COMMANDER OF, THE AIRBORNE DIVISION (WHICH HAS
TAKEN THE HIGHEST CASUALTIES SO FAR) MORALE IS HIGH.
ABRAMS ADVISES THAT PRESIDENT THIEU IS INVOLVED IN THIS OPERATION
PERSONALLY AND HAS BEEN FROM THE BEGINNING. THIEU HAS APPROVED ALL THE
PLANS, CHANGES AND MODIFICATIONS. AS YOU KNOW, HIS POLITICAL FUTURE
IS INEXTRICABLY TIED TO THE SUCCESS OF THIS OPERATION.
ABRAMS TOLD ME THAT WHILE WE HAVE SOME TOUGH FIGHTING AHEAD, HE
BELIEVES WE ARE GOING TO MAKE IT AND THAT WE ARE GOING TO DO WHAT WE
SET OUT TO DO.
TWO FIRE SUPPORT BASES HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED ALONG THE RIDGE SOUTH
OF ROUTE 9 TOWARDS THE TCHEPONE ROAD JUNCTIONS (LOLO AND LIZ)
THE VIETNAMESE MARINES NOW HAVE TWO BATTALIONS AT FIRE SUPPORT
BASE DELTA NORTH OF ROUTE 926, TWO ADDITIONAL VIETNAMESE MARINE
BRIGADES HAVE MOVED TO KHE SANH. FROM THE DELTA.
34 ADDITIONAL TANKS HAVE BEEN BROUGHT INTO MILITARY REGION ONE
FROM MILITARY REGION TWO AND ARE MOVING TOWARDS THE LAOTIAN BORDER TO
REINFORCE THE OPERATION, 17 TANKS MOVED ACROSS THE LAOTIAN BORDER
INTO THE OPERATION YESTERDAY. ABRAMS ADVISES THAT IN SPITE OF THEIR
CASUALTIES THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE ARMORED UNITS IN THIS AREA ARE IN GOOD
SHAPE,
CONCEPTUALLY THEN THE ARVN HAVE STARTED THEIR MOVE TO THE WEST
TOWARDS THE TCHEPONE ROAD JUNCTIONS AND HAVE MOVED VIETNAMESE MARINES
AND ADDITIONAL ARMOR IN TO COVER THEIR REAR AND THEIR FLANKS. LAM REALIZE
THE PORTANCE of ROUTE 914 To ENEMY LOGISTICS FLOW AND ISTAKING STEPS To CLOSE RTE 91
WE HAD A SHARP TANK/INFANTRY ACTION LAST NIGHT UP NORTH OF BAN DONG
AND WHILE THE ARVN TOOK HEAVY CASUALTIES, THEY PUNISHED THE ENEMY
BADLY. ABRAMS BELIEVES THE NORTH VIETNAMESE CASUALTIES MAY HAVE RUN AS
HIGH AS 300 KIA AND 14 TANKS DESTROYED, THIS AREA NORTH OF BAN DONG
IN WHICH FIRE SUPPORT BASES 30 AND 31 ARE LOCATED AND IN WHICH THE
HEAVIEST ACTIONS HAVE BEEN FOUGHT IS THE VITAL NORTHERN FLANK OF THE
OPERATION THROUGH WHICH THE NORTH VIETNAMESE MUST BRING REINFORCEMENTS
Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library DECLASSIFIED
This document has been reviewed pursuant to Executive Order 13526 and has been determined to be declassified.
TO SUPPORT THEIR FORCES,
THE FIRST DIVISION, WHICH IS MOVING WEST TOWARDS THE TCHEPONE ROAD
JUNCTION IS SOLID FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AND THE MORALE IS HIGH, THEY
ARE
EXPECT TO BE IN AS MANY AS FOUR SUPPORT BASES ALONG THE RIDGE OVER THE
NEXT THREE DAYS, FROM THERE THEY WILL HAVE A DOWNHILL SHOT AT THE ENEMY
ABRAMS ALSO ADVISED THAT THE OPERATION IN THE CHUP PLANTATION AREA
IN CAMBODIA IS GOING WELL. , THE ARVN HAVE PAUSED FOR SEVERAL DAYS
TO REORGANIZE AND REPLACE MATERIAL AND PERSONNEL LOSSES, THE ENEMY
HAS TAKEN SEVERE LOSSES IN THE VICINITY OF DAMBE WHERE THEY HAVE
CONCENTRATED FOUR NORTH VIETNAMESE REGIMENTS WITH THE INTENTION OF
ISOLATING THE ARVN FORCES AS THEY MOVE SOUTH FROM CHUULONG, GENERAL
MINH ATTACKED TWO TO THREE OF THESE REGIMENTS BEFORE WITHDRAWING TO THE
NORTH OF DAMBE, THE ENEMY HAS SUFFERED OVER 2000 KIA IN THE CHUP
OPERATION SINCE 4 FEBRUARY AND UNLESS HE HAS REPLACEMENTS READILY AT
HAND, HIS COMBAT EFFECTIVENESS IS BOUND TO SUFFER,
THERE ARE INDICATIONS THAT AT LEAST ONE ADDITIONAL NORTH VIETNAMESE
REGIMENT MAY MOVE TO JOIN THE ENEMY HERE. GENERAL MINH WELCOMES THIS
CONCENTRATION OF ENEMY FORCES AND INTENDS TO GO AFTER THE ENEMY
FOLLOWING THIS PAUSE FOR REFITTING.
GENERAL MINH AND HIS TROOPS HAVE SUCCESSFULLY WEATHERED A VERY
TRYING WEEK. MINH'S REPUTATION AND HIS TENTURE AS III CORPS COMMANDER
SEEMED TO BE AT STAKE DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE DAMBE BATTLE. HE HAS
DISPLAYED GREAT TENACITY, DETERMINATION AND SKILL IN PICKING UP THE
REINS OF AN ON-GOING OPERATION WHICH HAD REACHED A CRITICAL STAGE AND
WHOSE MOMENTUM HAD BEEN HAMPERED BY THE LOSS OF A CHARISMATIC LEADER,
GENERAL TRI.
ABRAMS ADVISES THAT MINH HAS EMERGED AS A COMMANDER WHOSE
CREDENTIALS ARE IN EXCELLENT ORDER. HE EXPECTS THAT UNDER MINH'S
DIRECTION, III CORPS WILL MAKE SUBSTANTIAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING
THE REMAINDER OF THE CAMPAIGN.
