Dear Mr. Prime Minister:
I was pleased to receive your letter of July 16
expressing enthusiasm and pleasure at my recent
announcement to accept an invitation to visit the People's
Republic of China.
Both our nations share the goal of building a lasting
peace in the world. By opening the door for more normal
relations between the United States and the People's
Republic of China I hope to bring about a reduction of
tensions from which all nations may benefit.
I am grateful for your expression of encouragement
and good wishes in this undertaking.
