Telecon Secretary Rogers 7:05 p. m. 10/13/69 K said on the TV show Wednesday night, it wasn't a Presidential directive but he would prefer if Rogers didn't appear. It was a case of crossed signals. Rogers agreed that it would make sense for him to appear on that kind of a show. K mentioned Rogers' appearance at the Fulbright committee and suggested that if there was a way Rogers could get out of it until after Nov. 3 it would be helpful. Rogers said he didn't want to try right now. They (committee) are trying to get him to the Executive Session. He wanted to wait until a few days have lapsed. Rogers asked if the President made the announcement and K said it was done at the 4:00 press briefing. Rogers indicated that the wives would release separate letters to the moratorium people. He thought we had taken the edge off with this and Humphrey's statement. K agreed that it may look a little better. He said it was hard for the people to keep up claims that we are not doigg anything. Rogers said we have done everything they have asked for. The fact is, he added, for whatever the reasons, the war has de-escalated. If they want to say thats not progress, then let them. Rogers asked if K had seen Goodell's comment. K had and thought it was terrible the way G was carrying on.
