K could not reach the Secretary this mornigg and had to go upstairs so
whate wanted R to get to the Secretary. Lodge wants to resign and the
time has sneaked up on us faster than K bank thought it would. Lodg e
wanted it announced today. Richardson said, "Oh, no. II K asked what
he meant by that and Richardson said he was just surprised and asked
who the replacement would be. K said we didn't have one yet. When
Richardson asked where it stood, K said it was a stalemate at this point.
Jokingly, K said if Richardson doesn't watch himself, we will put
Strausz-Hupe - in there. Richardson had heard various names mentioned.
though for a replacement. K didn't think there was a problem since we
could announce a replacement in two weeks.
K wanted Richardson to tell the Secretary also that Scranton said Walsh
wants his resignation to be announced at the same time. Richardson
didn't think that would be such a good idea -- it would look as though
the whole delegation was giving up. K indicated that Walsh's resignation
could wait but we wouldn't mind if it looked that way for a few weeks.
