Telecon Secretary Laird 12/18/69 4:50 p. m. K: I read about you all the time. L: You're the only guy I know who talks to Kraft. K: I haven't seen him in 6 weeks. Actually I thought it was a plus. L: It's wrong. I'm calling about the budget thing. I talked to Mayo today. Schlesinger and he got 16 items they want me to look over in the 71 budget. I think I should avoid it. K: Right. We've got a meeting on Saturday morning. L: You told me over two weeks ago hexagon is his big one. K: Everyone I've talked to wants Hexagon, don't you? L: Sure-- don't think we should it up again. We've affected one million jobs. I shouldn't talk with Mayo. K: I agree; I'11 back you up. L: We've got military civilian personnel we're laying off. We're going to have an effect. We're going down next year another 4. 5 billion. K: I'll tell the P I'm behind you. I will tell him we have to to get back down there. He doesn't like Schlesinger anyway. L: I think he read the story this morning and believed it. K: If that committee serves only one function it's to help you, not Mayo. I think of myself as your ally. L: I was afraid you weren't cranked in on this. K: I wasn't. L: Rogers must have read the story and gotten carried away by it. K: The P was amused by it; he didn't pay any attention to it. He thought it was a plus. It will give you some attention for what you've been doing. L: I don't need that Hind of attention.
