Telecon The President 12/23/69 9:11 a. m. P: I noticed in the News Summary today about 2 F-111s K: Yes, there are two. P: Don't you think this is a good time The Air Force ought to move on that thing. It's been plain politics. K: The Navy has stopped buying. P: Not only to stop buying, but to ground them. K: You are right. P: Okay, I'll see you later today. 12/23/69 9:25 a. m. P: 16 of these F-111s have crashed in 2 years. Two yesterday one in South Dakota and one in Nevada. It's really ridiculous. K: There were put together for some abstract notions of kost effectiveness and so forth. They're supposed to be interchangeable between the Air Force and the Navy. And now they don't work for both. They don't fly them from the same place; one from an aircraft carrier, the other from the ground. I'll talk to Mel to see what he would think about cancelling them. P: We have a problem. K: I have a cdal in to Mel right now. P: See you later, then we'll talk about last evening. It was quite a night, wasn't it? K: Fascinating. He didn't try to see me in October or November. Didn't make any efforts to batter me up. Last night he wasall charm. He said you were the one who could do it in the Middle East and no one else. He said we gaveyou Vienna on 24 hours notice. He said if there's another roundthey may ask for Helsinki. But there's no time limit on Vienna. He said what do you think of 3 months. But they did what you wanted on the next round and we can stretch that out.
