HAK: David Rockefeller
23 Dec 69: 6:40
R: First of all I had a talk today with Mr. Gorbow, the
representative of the UAR. I think I sent you a brief conversa-
tion with him. There is no question that they were pleased and
impressed with what happened, but I think it -- and he is going
back to report everything to Nasser on 6 January, but there was
one thing that clearly was a message he wanted me to deliver to
you and that was that if this oil rig of the King people were
to arrive and would be put down next to theirs they have sort
of
it all was going on SO far but this really would be an
explosive thing.
K: What can I do about it. It is a Canadian rig isn't it?
R: King isn't Canadian, is he? K: Do you know King? He
has
been told in the most unambiguous terms possible that we don't
like what he is doing. It hasn't made an overwhelming impression
on him. He has even been threatened with prosecution. We are
not supporting it in any sense.
R: Do you think the rig is Canadian? K: My impression is that
the rig is Canadian but have not followed it in great detail.
R: He said this would be an absolute disaster - there would be
no way of stopping an explosion.
K: I will have to look into it and see if there is anything more
we can do. What conceivable interest could the White House
have in this? R: Well, the interest to the U. S. government.
K: No, I mean what interest in getting the rig in there. We have
no interest in upsetting the . status quo.
R: I don't think he thinks the White House is pushing it. He said
if it goes in this would be very dangerous.
K: I will do my best. R: OK. #2, Eugene Black has been out
there a great deal. He had a great many dealings with Nasser and
Nasser probably likes him as much as anyone and has written him
to go out unless he is told that he shouldn't, toward the end of
January. K: No, I think he should.
