TELCON Safire/Kissinger 6:20 pm 2/16/70 S: I Thought you handled that fine. K: Could I call you back in a few minutes ? S: Sure 6:35 pm 2/16/70 S: The reporters didn't ask the questions that they will ask after reading it tomorrow. There are a lot of questions on general purpose forces and Communist China -- foreign aid and economical stuff will follow K: Do you think they were positive? S: I hung around to see what they thought. The serious types were impressed. Those that don't understand it, don't like it. There was a high seriousness by those that count. I wrote (?) the highlights and I understand that the first two pages were off the record. But it might be what a writer sees. K: He has stronger feelings about the military side. S: Timmons, N , and Zeigler will need it first thing in the morning. K: We appreciate your help -- x both professionally and personally. S: You say that only to make my heart pound. K: No, seriously. You are the only cynic I like. And I don't think you are, deep down. S: That's right. I'm a sentimental slob like you.
