N: What do you do tomorrow?
K: Tomorrow you have the Congressional briefing. I think for the biparti-
san briefing I should take Richardson along
N: I agree, and Packard too.
K: I will take both.
N: Just SO you get the balance with the NSC.
N: Is it released for the afternoon or morning papers?
K: On Wednesday for the afternoon papers.
N: And Thursday for the morning papers. When you see the foreign
press I think for the Soviets say we are not criticizing anybody. Our
interests happen to be different. No use to gloss it over and say every-
thing is going to be settled with a smile and a handshake. It is going to
be settled by negotiating in terms of what we want in the world.
K: Hugh Sidey wanted to know whether you were disappointed in relations
with the Soviets. I said, no, it is all on course. Another wanted to
know if we would like to have a year's quiet.
N: On another subject, I think it was just as well to wrap up that B-52
thing in Laos today.
K: I think it was the right decision to make. I think it's a good prelude to
Saturday.
N: I hopw Mel goes ahead and hits this target with massive tacair at the
same time and shake them up a little bit.
K: I have read the account of the Walters' conversation. He talked to Haig
on the phone. He had the feeling they were in a much different mood than
any time he had previously seen them. One of the North Vietnamese said
he is learning English because the way the world is changing he may one
day be working for the Americans. They have never talked that way before.
I don't think much will come out of it.
N: Well, you have always said nothing will come of the first meeting, but
if you just stake it out you may get a nibble.
