S: You must be pooped.
K: It was quite an exercise.
S: I sure hope it works.
K: As I look at it, the State Department can't lose either way. If
it works It's good for the country and if it fails you might be rid of me.
S: You are the tower of strength. Don't talk that way. I'm cal-
ling on the Jordenian arms thing. The King decided to send his assistant
to Washington next Thursday. He wants to talk about the whole broad
range of things. It's a golden opportunity for us.
K: It nearly quadruples the artillery.
S: But it's peanuts compared to what the Soviets are not selling but
giving to them.
K: Could we have a meeting on this early next week?
K: Soviet pilots as well as the other? S: Yes.
S: Yes. / But this guy is coming Thursday. I need to know about the
arms package. It has been in the offing for a long time. We can play
the timing, but I need to be able to surface it. I don't want him to come and end
up empty-handed. But if I tell him not to come it will be taken as a signal
by the King.
K: He can get something, but we should do it as an integrated total.
S: I see your point. But the question of the pilots and the Israelis is
going to be prolonged.
K: No it isn't, because we won't have it.
S: Well, our intelligence community can't make up its mind what it means.
K: But you know why that is.
S: Yes.
K: And the President has made up his mind. I would like for the President
to have a chance, which he hasn't had yet, to focus on the artillery side of it.
Ithink we've had to make too many tactical decisions there. This is a more
dangerous area than Vietnam.
