W: The participants are coming in this afternoon and
evening and there's already speculation about a dramatic
announcement to be made by the President in June.
K : Jesus Christ, you people drive me crazy.
W: I'm sorry. I just talked to Haldeman about it. If
the speculation could be guided our way it would be helpful.
All we've said is just that the President will meet with
these peeple.
K : What does the President think?
W:
I havent talked with him. These people know how to
handle themselves.
K :
But how do people know they are arriving?
W: It goes out from the military bases when they come in.
K : I want do dampen speculation on a dramatic announcement.
There will be none, add it is killing us to have all this
business.
W: There's a thing today in the Washington Daily News
saying the President has told Congressional leaders there
will be a dramatic announcement, that 150,000 will be out
by the end of this year.
K : Baloney.
W : Right.
K : Why doesn't Ron stop these hings? He thinks there's
going to be one and doesn't want to be caught short.
W: I will say this was planned before the President
came here.
K : Say it's a briefing on Cambodian operations and the
future course of the war. There will be no dramatic announce-
ment. It's a briefing the President wants as he makes prepara-
tions for the next phase.
W: Okay. About withdrawal from Cambodia. We're firm
on being out by June 30.
K : I don't want to hear that question again. We are
not pulling a fast one on you. There is nothing new. By
