The President
6/1/70
1:00 p.m.
P :
Is the press all right this morning?
K: I talked to Ron--he felt it was playing all right.
P : We may need about 5 minutes of explaining the top
part of it. But we don't need a Congressional thing before.
K :
Oh no.
P : You can explain that to Bryce. Say 'you can under-
stand; nothing shocking. I of course there will be something
about the
.
But we don't
need to explain about that. Second thing is that I'm inclined
to think that if you get into a backgrounder
I'm not
interested in the writing press.
K: I think we should let them play the story.
P : They'll try to divert. it to what's the South Viet-
namese reaction going to be.
K : They already got Ron on that. I've told him to say
from now on 'you'll just have to wait for the speech. I
P : Who's pressing him?
K: I don't know. If they can get the thing restated
often enough they can get some inconsistency.
P : Yes, that's one thing. Ron does a good job, but he
must never restate anything. He should say "I've already
covdred that." Any time he restates anything he gives a new
story.
K: And particularly this week.
P : That's right. Were they trying to get him to say
we wouldn't support the GVN?
K: Exactly. No arr support, etc.
P : We don't want to say that, but we have to.
K: He did say we wouldn't give them any air support,
which he shouldn't have done. But it will be overridden by
your speech. We got a big haul of individual weapons yester-
day. We are above 10 thousand on ammunition. In rice we
will have over 11 midlion when you talk. In mortar rounds
we
are above 45 thousand. We got a thousand smaller rocket
rounds, SO we're above 24,000 on that.
