President/Kissinger 7:55 pm 7/21/70 -2- P: (cont) thing comes out now, the will say Sullivan has to go. But I think Bill will go back and tell them they have to support the President. But I had to clear that thing up with Mel. I said it wasn't political, it was the school. K: You did that very well. They have to get used to Bruce. P: Maybe now they will nibble. I want to play this cool and tough. I want that played in the morning. K: Reiterate what you said today. Check back here if there are any questions and you expect them to tell you if they have anything that's worrisome. Put it more subtly than I am now. P: And most important, a good friendly breakfast. Bunker is completely loyal. And Bruce would have to gain some respect from this meeting. K: After he told me at 12:30 that this would get him into a confrontation with the Secy, he smiled at me when Rogers said the deadline didn't matter. P: I am going to say we are kxoxx working this out and you will be part of it. It won't make them feel it's helpless like Lodge. But I will tell them they have to play it my way. K: They agree with you. Bunker wavered yesterday but he said today he was glad about it because he would have trouble with Thieu. P: Sept. 15, I feel. On the European trip. My feeling is contingent. I want to see how things are Sept. 1. If it's not particularly hopeful regardless of what we do, I will do it later. Next spring. But if it seems we can get a few Senators and then the U. N. K: Sept. 1 is a little late. Maybe Aug. 20. P: You can see that I don't want to xxxixx waste a trip. I don't know what we would do to top it in 171. K: We will have a SALT agreement in '71. P: You lean to a trip. Yugo., Spain, Britain, and Ireland. K: And maybe Brussels. P: What about the Dutch? K: We owe them a visit.
