K: I was wondering if before I went off or on the West Coast you and I shouldn't
get together to chat.
R: Wen do you leave.
K: First thing Friday morning.
R: How about tomorrow. Have any free time.
K: I will make some. Around noon? or 2:30?
R: Let's make it W 2:30. Damn it! It's when the President of Finland is here.
I am having a lunch for him. Let me look at my calendar.
K: 4:30 or 5:00 today?
R: 5:00 would be good. What do you think of Egypt's answer?
K: It far exceeds
R: God, yes. Unless they want to improve their position during the cease-fire.
K: We always knew that whatever their answer would be, the next round would
be sticky. We never thought their answer would be SO unconditional.
R: I never did.
K: Never thought it would be unclarified.
R: The whole of the Jarring statement which is the guts of the statement. Now
we have to get Israeli.
K: But the next two weeks make that easier.
R: Rabin has been good.
K: The pattern of the next month will gell.
R: It will be the first progress since 167 and even further than that. Everything
prior to ,67 lead up to the war.
K: And a major step by the Egyptians to commit themselves to the existence
of Israel. This is a considerable achievement.
R: I have cautioned everybody over here to be quiet. Not take credit or backgroun
it
I called U Thant and asked that no comment be made
