Ambassador Freeman/Kissinger
K: Welcome back.
F: Thanks very much.
I am going off tomorrow morning,
probably to Cape Cod. Kathleen is expecting you to spend the
day with us Sunday week.
K: Would Monday be alright instead of Sunday.
F: Sunday is her birthday.
K; Ok, I didn't know. I'll come up for her birthday.
F: I have a message from the Prime Minister. I've been talking
to him at some length in London last week. He is expecting to
see the President and is anxious to do this. He has been very much
thrown by Ian McLeod's death. Left him with many things. He
is having great difficulty getting time that won't tax him too much.
If you don't want full dress visit, how about working a day at San
Clemente. He just wants to see the President with just the
minimum duty.
K: We would want whatever you want. Which would he prefer --
Washington or San Clemente?
F: He would like San Clemente. He asked me to find out whether,
in principal, the President would be willing to consider this. He
would like to find this out without committing himself to the idea
until
K: We will be here from the 22nd to Sept. 8. We will be in Mexico
the 20-21. Not best time for you. Let's say from 25th on.
F: May I say to him, while you give no commitment, that this is
done out of hand and that suitable dates might be found.
K: Wou ld the foreign secretary come?
F:
If Mr. Heath did it like this, the foreign secretary would
not come. Secretary will be here at UN. I am not definite.
K: I will have to talk this over with the President. He might think
less about it. than a few weeks ago. I will make absolutely sure
that there is no commitment,
