K: I have a personal question you may not want to answer. I am going
to be taking my children back to New England this weekend which means
that I am going to be out of telephone contact 36 hours. Is that from your
point of view a safe thing to do?
R: I don't expect any development in the next 36-48 hours.
K: Between tonight my time and Monday night my time. I will be
in effect out of contact. Or even Sunday morning my time and Monday
evening you don't expect anything?
R: As it looks today I don't expect it.
K: If there were anything of major significance while I am out of
contact I don't think it would be in anyone's interest.
R: To the best of my knowledge I don't expect anything to happen in the
next 48 hours unless something totally unpredictable happens.
K: Right. Well that is not your style of operation. You may not believe
this but I am asking on a personal basis. I am not asking this in order
to get information from you.
R: The Cabinet is meeting but I don't believe there would be any
basic decision tomorrow.
K: Nothing that requires dramatic American action immediately.
R: As it seems to me, no. I don't know what you have after this.
K: After I am back in contact Monday night things will be handled in
whatever way people have dealt previously.
R: I see. Well, I think the present situation looks to continue at least
for the next few days.
K: Right. OK.
R: When will you be back?
K: Monday late afternoon. But I am going up to New England and am
going to be driving around with my children there. There will be many
