C: Gene Patterson and I have discussed your memo to Ben Bradley.
K: I didn't write anything.
C: It's xoxt a memo from him on what you said. I have it here. It wax says
it's a lie. No mem ber of your staff collapsed or taken on a stretcher. I called
Larry Eagleburger. The only thing that was wrong was that he wass taken
first to the infirmary and then taken in a WH car. He could unstand why
people would think it was an ambulance.
K: I didn't know what you were talking about. I was out of the office once and
when I returned I was told that kx he went to the infirmary. I even went over to
see him but he had left. The rest is a lie. That I said I need him and he
cannot go to the hospital is ridiculous.
C: Someone on your staff told me this. It wasn't done with malice. This
wasn't the lead of the column. It was baried. He wasn't implying you were
the Simon Leagre. I know what it is to work for hard taskmasters.
K: It may depend on the context on which it was put. I have asked my
staff members who were here. We didn't think of Larry Eagleburger. I don't
want to go into
I didn't know he was going to the hospital. I didn't
know he was in the hospital, only that he'd gone to the dispensary after feeling
faint. I went to the dispensary to see him. I have great affection for him and
he has asked to come back to work for me. And cables are not cleared that way.
It gives the impression that the State Dept. officials bring cables over here
and then they bring them back to the Secy.
C: No, No. Someone who walked into the room when xlxx the cable was under
discussion and the person who told me this
K: He is a liar. Great cocktail conversation. If you know how cables are
cleared it cannot happen this way. It's handled by LDX and the staff. If I
should have to talk to the Secy. I would call him. To think that I would tell
a junior officer ? ? ? ?
C: So the person on your staff who says this is a liar.
K: He may have done it as a joke. It may be that I run into people who I don't
recognize as a member of my staff. That part I don't deny. I wouldn't
recognize everyone of the junior members of my staff. But this doesn't happen.
C: But does it happenx upset you that someone who holds you in affection
