A: What I want to do is to write a piece about the understandings
reached by the previous Administration on Vietnam. It seems to me
it needs a lot of clarification; there's been a lot of misrepresentation
about it.
K: Are you saying that the President is misrepresenting it?
That would be a novel way of getting inside information.
A: No, not at all. I am, for instance, particularly struck by
Braden's piece in today's Post saying Laird was lying in his teeth.
Is there any way of getting at what was and was not agreed to?
K: Yes, but I 'd like to check it with the P r esident first. It depends
on how you understand an understanding. How the other side took it and
how we saw it.
A: You say something and I say I understand you because I under- -
stand English.
K: And you leave the clear implication that if no one objects, that's
the way you are going to act. Stu, I've just been called to the President
A: Could you check into this. I think it needs clarification.
K: Yes I can and I think SO to and you'r one of the few people I
would trust with it. I will look into it and call you.
