R: I was calling to tell you that Habib has checked Kennedy's man's
list and the names on the list -- 339 -- are identical with what we have
and the dead they list are identical to ours with two exceptions and they
include two additional men dead on our list who aren't on Hanoi's.
K: In other words, they gave us nothing.
R: That's right.
K: I think we should make a statement to that effect.
R: I agree. I thought in the statement tomorrow I would say that
Hanoi picked out two well-known Senators, asked them to come to Paris
or send an assistant, building up hopes and it turned out to be a cruel
hoax.
K: Excellent.
R: Then we should press them and say that the thing to do now is to
permit inspection by the independent body, probably the ICRC, and return
the sick and disabled.
K: That sounds excellent to me.
R: I think the President will be interested in this.
K: I'11 tell him right away.
R: One other thing. The President wants to take a hard line on
the
naval activity in the Caribbean/
K:
We should say we are watching very carefully
and it's clear that the understanding covers any servicing of ships with
offensive weapons or something like that.
R: In port?
K: That is something we should leave open.. That just encourages
doing it out of port. Why say that?
