Telecon Ron Ziegler 1/6/71 3:25 p. m. K: I just wanted you to know I am seeing Herb Raplow. He wanted five minutes worth of guidance for a year-end review. Z: Great. K: I thought you would have no djjections. Z: None at all. When are you seeing him? K: In about half an hour. And Schecter and Griffith from LIFE have asked to see me briefly. Z: Great. What time? K: I forget. In the morning some time. Z: Griffith also wants to see the President. K: He won't see him. Z: Why not? K: Because he hates him. At least he told me that last year. But I may be wrong. It's happened before, rarely but it's happened. Z: I just read my briefing. I think I did all right. Laird backed off. They put a clarifying statement on that, saying he was referring to aggressive actions. On ground combat I said the President has said under no circumstances will we introduce ground combat forces into Cambodia. This is a rough business and it's getting rougher. K: Now they're playing for blood. Z: November 6, 1972 is going to be a very wonderful time. Then we can just concern ourselves with the things we have to do and not worry about this. K: And I will be back at Harvard. Z: You won't be back there. You are going to be the only Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs who has hung in there for eight years. K: Resigning three times a month.
