TELECON
Senator Jackson/Mr. Kissinger
11:02 a. m., March 11, 1971
J:
Henry?
K:
How is my favorite Democratic candidate?
J:
My friend Stu is upset about the security information that I
am alleged to have
K:
If Stu has any right to say anything about security information,
that is news to me.
J:
I met with the press and said if I didn't know what is classified
and what isn't.
K:
You were wise not to accept the Secretary of Defense job. It
was good for you but bad for the country. I understand you are concerned.
Why don't we have a talk. Whether you are concerned or not, I would
like to see you.
J:
I am fearful that these two positions are going to cause problems
to put it mildly. I kidded after the hearing was over with the group
when they were up -- Gerard Smith's group -- off the record, I said
you prepare a draft statement for me when I'm on the floor. I think
serious consideration should be given to changes in the position you
are going to take.
K:
Are you free Saturday morning?
J:
I am tied up Saturday morning. How about Saturday afternoon?
K:
Are you going to the Gridiron thing?
J:
XX No, my wife is sick.
K:
Let's aim for Saturday afternoon. How about 3:00? Shall we
meet in my office?
J:
I will come down on the way home. It's more sensible. After
all, you refused to appear up here in the proper places. I don't under-
stand that.
