P: How are you thin morning? At the office?
K: Yes.
P: Snowing down there? It's snowing here.
K: It must be pretty.
P: It has a good feel to it. I took a look at the morning papers. They came
off all right.
K: They are not bad. I talked with Moorer. The facts are as I suspected and I
get my insight from a colonel who briefs me. They are getting out faster than
they have told us.
P: That doesn't botther me. When you came in last night you said if they are
going to do it we might as well get it over with. Get the G-- D thing off
TV. We will not make the killing we expected but make a killing.
K:
The basic accomplishments -- Bunker cabled me this morning and over a
period of months it will be vindicated. Morale is high and Thieu thinks it's
a major political achievement for him.
P: I wanted to know that because I want to hit it with Howard K. Smith.
K: That's what he thinks.
P: What does the colonel tell you?
K: He's a tough combat type. He is a junior Hiag. I study the batalions. It
looks like they are moving out faster than they said. He said that's right. As
long as they are moving out they won't interrupt traffic.
P: The main thing is to get out without getting a major battalion knocked off.
K: That's right. Haig sent in figures from out there on caches picked up and
interruption of supplies. We have a better analysis on that here.
P: I will not try to get current figures in my head You give me an updated
information on noon Monday. Get it down to short terms so people can under-
stand it in terms of everything -- terms like traffic to xaught south cut more than
half. Also the idea of guns and rounds of ammo. Millions of pounds of rice
is good. Get it in words and see if you or Ken can get it into colorfull language.
Get the best figures. I don't want the old figures. I would have it Mon. about
3:00.
