Secretary Rogers/Mr. Kissinger 5:45 p.m., April 21, 1971 - 2 - R: You remember we were considering Rudy Peterson for the Hoffman job? K: That's right. R: I have talked to him. He is interested, but he has a problem with his wife. She doesn't want to live in New York. So he wants more time. I would like to caution, however -- be careful that the President doesn't spout out that he is doing this. We will have to exercise a good deal of care, but I think he will take it. K: That would be an excellent choice. R: What do you think of Jim Schlesinger? K: He's abrasive. For what kind of job? R: The security assistance coordinating job. K: He wouldn't be bad for that. R: You need someone who is. K: He would be good for that. He is highly intelligent, very thoughtful, but he has this abrasive quality. When you get used to him, you realize he does it because he is a dedicated guy. R: I think he might be pretty good. We need someone to deal with the Pentagon. They don't really follow too well. K: He knows where the bodies are buried. Shultz and I are talking to him about an evaluation group over here, too. R: I also have the job Mike Collins left. One fellow who was suggested was Marshall Wright. He's damned good; he has done some successful things. K: I would have thought he would be better for the McCloskey job than for the top job. R: In a sense, McCloskey's is more important than the PA job.
