P: If I may take a couple of minutes on the phone.
K: Unless you are asking me to resign.
P: What nonsense!
K: I keep getting letters asking me to resign.
P: I have been seeing this stuff. The nasty attacks are on Sam Huntington.
The SDS is making him the principle target after no freedom of speech for
war criminals. That's not what I called about.
K: I was joking.
P: It's serious because it's nasty around here. I called about a possibility
of having something checked. A group of younger government department types
who are specializing in measurement of opinion ? ? ? . They have been doing
work previously and said look here, all work on VN has been crap. It's not
XXX sophisticated or discriminating enough to be of use. It's an able group of
young people and wondered if it's of interest to you and whether you would want to
talk with them XNX or your staff.
K: I don't conduct public opinion polls in my office but some people here do.
Could they write me a page on what they want to do and I will get it to the right
people?
P: One will be there Monday and Tuesday and I don't think they could get word
to you before that. His name is Bupp. He was the
of the Atomic
Energy Commission. Mid-career student and my assistant. Hedwill have him
call your office on Monday.
K: Is this a group that's apen-minded or a group determined to end the war and
wants to prove it should be ended now?
P: If it's the latter you shouldn't touch it. I don't know.
K: It doesn't have to be endorsement of what we are doing.
P: I think it would be just. They are probably personally biased but not among
the idealogs. They are working on Project Cambridge. Not among those that
sign petitions.
that
K: What their private views are is their business. It's the studiesxxbexxar e
important.
