A: I thought I might call you because I think the President should know.
I luncheoned today with Hale Boggs and the House speaker two days ago
and they both said the situation in the House is harder and harder. They
are going with the Democratic leadership in the Senate. Hale also said
the left wing in the House attempted to serve an ultimatum saying that
they would be in trouble if they didn't support Mansfield Amendemnt.
I asked Hale how he can hold the line. He said through now but didn't know
about next year. kexlasked what the President could do and he said there's
a lot in a statement that's coming up on Nov. 15. I am in business that's
no business of mine. I know the man wikxx well and they are courageous.
K: They think a statment by the President on the 15th would help them.
A: A statement on troop withdrawals coming up. I think the President would
xxxxx reward them that they deserve.
K: Advance warning.
A: Not waste of time and insure their future support while they can hang on
and they could give advice if he called them in and said we have this problem
and this is what I must do.
K: Hale Boggs and the Speaker.
A: Key figures. They are feeling the heat in their party. It's to be to com-
pliment them on resisting the heat and how the President appreciates that
and get their advice on what can reduce the heat.
K: We will do that.
A: They don't like the President but in this area they thought he did a good
job and they thought he deserved support. They are being brave and when
they are this kind of approach is good.
K: We have XUNX had Sen. Ford and Arends on that basis.
A: These people are more important then them. It's something to do on a
private drink after dinner.
K: That's extremely helpful.
A: I am not in where I shouldn't be.
K:
It's extremely helpful and we will do it. It's the best proof that you are
where you should be.
