E: Where will you be for Christmas?
K: Probably in NY.
E: Monetary crisis cleared up this week?
K: At least this month.
E: Everybody placing you and Connally against each other. You xxxxx will
push him for settlement because he sees domestic aspect and you see foregin
policy.
K: Sure but Connally is a Cabinet Member with whom I work most closely.
In early Nov. He and I agreed on common strategy. Not a shred of conflict.
I raised the concerns that involved me.
E: It's obvious. It's the function of the two jobs.
K: Connally is more subtle then the press gives him credit for. I have a
high opinion of him. It was desirable that someone hang tough. We steered
towards solution at Azores and (we had) it.
E: All the way WX back to August?
he
K: No. By mid-Nov. Or end of Oct. Before x left on Asian trip there was
a tentative decision and made final after the trip.
E: Nice to call me.
K: Soviets irresponsible in getting it started and shows legacies of the past die
hard in that system. They helped it andx end but cannot give them credit for
that. Detente policy has a jolt on that side. For both our sakes they couldn't
use it for cheap gainst. Good reason for both sides and expecially for them
in months ahead.
E: Maybe ixxx not SO harmful in the M. E.
K: I am not SO sure. Maybe even a positive one. We will save that for a later
talk. I really mean that.
E: I will call you after the first of the year for breakfast.
K: Good.
