P: I wonder about saying ? ? ? ? ?.
K: If you are uncomfortable in going that far, forget it.
Wex Say our record is
clear, we have made concessions. Let others respond.
P: It's true too. I had planned to take a hard line on that and give ** short shfift
to other peace plans. I will say each candidate for President has a plank and there
are 11 candidates.
K: That's a good line. I saw McCloskey on TV saying that last summer we turned
down proposal that would have ended the war. If they drive us too hard we will
show the record.
P: Always insisted on political conditions.
K: We are safe as humanly possible.
P: As you pointed out, poor Muskie has egg on his face for POW for withdrawal
they have turned down flat.
K: I would make that point.
P: That Crosby Noyes column you have to read again. It's something.
K: I read it this morning.
P: Govt. of SVN after we have withdrawal they make deal with the enemy. And the
enemy continues to have support from their allies.
K: And over one billion in aid from Soviet Union.
P: Don't want to get into deal where Nixon attacks Muskie plan.
K: If they ask about last summer say it is the same as what they are saying this
year. They insist on political overthrow of SVN govt. Either directly or indirectly.
P: That's good. I will take Connally to Fla. He is fatigued. He is burned up at
A. Burns, and State and Peterson. He feels they are sabotaging them and they may.
He is SO much better than they.
K: It will be a hectic two weeks.
P: I understand the Rogers are going on the plane but not with us. They are going
for a vacation in Key Biscayne. Want this to be a domestic policy weekend. Connally
and Ehrlichman are going for working. Next week except for Malraux we are keeping
it clear and take off Thurs.
