Telcon; Marvin Kalb; Jan. 31, 1973; 11:14 a.m. 2 MK: I see. Well, Henry, in that case, maybe there's really no problem. Because working on the kind of assumptions that we've been working on for the past year we have cleared already 9:00 p.m. Thursday. That's tomorrow. You just can't get better time than that. K: Yes. MK: And it is an hour. It's full coverage. It's total. K: One other thing that I don't want is - and this is between you and me - MK: Yeah. K: I do not want to be on discussing any differences between the President and me. MK: Henry, I told you the other day. K: I mean, there aren't any, but I'll be goddammed if I go on national television to protest what should be taken for granted. MK: Yeah, well I told you the other day that I would prompt you in advance, we would discuss areas, and I still want to do that. And I repeat what I told you a hundred times, that the point is not sensationalism but a serious discussion Kz of foreign policy, where you found it, where it is today, what the achievements are, what some of the disappointments have been, etc. It is not an attempt to get into the area that you just mentioned, by any means. K: Okay, you know, I don't mind having a question on how does the President work on these things, how he and I work together. MK: Well, of course. K: I mean, that's a fair question. MK: Sure. K: And that I think might not be bad to ask. But I don't want to go into any of this Colson-Ziegler, then press triangle of yesterday. MK: You will not get involved in that with me. And I assumed that you knew that. K: Yes, but that isn't the issue. I have been trying to reach Ziegler for an hour. I've been trying to find out where this goddammed thing stands, but he hasn't told me.
