K:
Hello.
DK:
I just wanted to find out if you wanted a franchise in Acapulco or China.
K:
(Laughs) I'll take - I think I'll take the Acapulco franchise.
DK: You've got to know some money too. Henry, I'm very anxious to
see you about something with regards to the Soviet Union. I'm coming
down tomorrow and I know that's a helluva early date to do it but you
happen to have
K:
Well, I'm on the West Coast.
DK:
Oh, you are. When are you going to come back?
K:
Next week.
DK: Well, let me ask you - if you can answer it then I can delay. Is there
anything getting close on who's going to be our Ambassador to the Soviet
Union?
K:
Not that I know.
DK: Because I would like to make a recommendation on it which at the outset
will - you might just immediately rebel at, but if I explain the thing why
I think, if possible it should be done and I'd like to talk to you personally
about it and then if it's something pressing. I have not discussed this
with anybody and I don't want to discuss it with the President unless
you agree. The guy that I want to recommend I think he damn well owes
it to but I wouldn t want to make that point unless you agree that there
weren't other problems that would be caused.
K:
Can you tell me who it is ?
DK:
Yes, Stans.
K:
Oh no.
DK: Well, see I knew this was why - Henry, let me tell you this: I'm talking
if you can get over this present problem.
K:
No, no I'm not talking about the present problem. He just has no sense
for the subtlety of that relationship.
