I'm calling trying to assess some information we have\nand frankly mainly looking for background and not for a news story. We\nhave a correspondent in Cambodia who has fairly good and friendly contacts\nwith them, people close to the North Vietnamese there.\nHAK: Are there North Vietnamese in Cambodia? I mean in Phnom Penh.\nor you mean North Vietnamese in the countryside.\nJarrel: I'm not sure where he is in touch with them. All I know is he is\nbased in Cambodia and had some pretty good contacts with them in the past.\nHe is telling our people in New York that they are telling him XXXX\nthe report he has is that the Pathet Lao,xxx because they simply did not\nhave facilities.\nHAK: Now are you talking about Cambodia or about Laos.\nJarrel: I'm talking about Laes. This fellow is based in and reporting from\nCambodia. These are North Vietnamese contaats that he has and I'm not\nsure where he has them. He has relayed information to New York that\nthe Pathet Lao in Laos did not have adequate facilities or even just\nrudimentary facilities for keeping prisoners. And as a matter of course\nover a kxxxgxexxx long period of time as prisoners would be captured in Laos,\nthey would hold them for a few days, and then because of their transitory\nnature and the lack of ability to keep them as prisoners, they sort of\nsystematically executed, he is saying several hundred. He doesn't have\nafigure on it. But not as a matter of genocide or a matter of\nbut\nout of expediency.\nHAK: Well, I don't know how to answer this. There is an extraordinary\ndisporportion between the number that is missing and the number they claim\nto have as prisoners. And if the percentage were anything like what it is in,\nwhat it turned out to be in North and even in South Vietnam, it should be\ncloser to one hundred rather than the nine they claim they have. And SO\nall I can say is that it has a certain amount of plausibility. In fact, we have\npictures that they themselves released of people that they captured who"
