TELCON Secretary Kissinger/Mr. Atherton Page 1 11:15 a. m. 11/17/73 K: A1, have you seen this Cherokee from Cairo? A: Not I haven t t K: About letting the ships through? A: No, sir. K: And -- well will you take a look at it. Now I have already told Dinitz they may ask the ships to identify themselves, which of course when I mentioned to Dinitz, was national betrayal of Israeli interests, even though they are letting the ships through and they have already given orders to that effect, SO --but we haven't given the suburbs of Cairo this week--they are in a particularly feisty mood A: Ah huh. K: So will you do a message to Keating SO that you two would transmit this with our strong recommendation that they avoid publicity A : That they avoid publicity. K: Yeh and to say this is another accomplishment A: Okay K: Have you seen the other stuff from Fahmi? A: haven't seen anything this morning. K: Where the hell are you? A: I was in the office, I just dropped by Joe's house to show a few things to him and I'm going right back --but I was there until 1/2 hr ago. K: Okay, well will you get a look at that, and also is someone drafting that message to Saqquf A" I'm working on that, yes. So I'11 have one on Saqquf and one to Keating. K And another one to Fahmi in which he asks for our support to the Israelis on the disengagement in the bilaterals and what you should say is I feel very strongly if we can move in the direction discussed with Sadat much more effectively within the framework of a peace conference. A: Absolutely. Right.
