TELECON
Secretary Kissinger/Rober McNamara
Thursday, January 31, 1974, 5:30 p.m.
K : Bob, I wondered whether you can give me a date when you
can go to Egypt.
M: Well, what I need to know is what I should do there, but
I can tell you roughly.
K : Let's have breakfast on Saturday on what you should do
there. But can we in the meantime communicate a possible
time to them?
M: I could be there -- it depends on what there schedule is
but I could be there Saturday, February 23rd.
K :
All right.
M: And I don't know how long
K: Maybe a couple of days?
M: I could probably be there part of Friday and Saturday and
part of Sunday. Friday is probably a holiday in Egypt.
K: I will communicate with them.
to discuss a
rational American development program, and I don't have the
capability in this department to send an intelligent person
there.
M :
I'm not sure I'm the right person.
K: What they need now is understanding and seriousness.
They don't need nit-pickers to go there and tell them what they
can't do.
M: I can go there, Henry, but it's a little delicate to be
talking from an American international bank point of view.
K: Can't you go there as my friend?
M: Definitely.
K:
Thank you.
M:
I'm perfectly prepared to do it that way. I'm supposed to
be in New York Friday night late, so it would be difficult to
get there early on Saturday.
K: Let's do it late Saturday morning.
M :
11:00. ['ll be -- make it 11:30. I'll be in your office
11:30 Saturday morning.
