Page 2 K: I had a word with Nelson about it the other day. He checked one view he had and-- R: How do you feel about that? K: David, you know my affection for the family and for you. It is a somewhat precarious position, if I can be ohonest with you. From the national point of view, you would of course be a tremendous asset, but you'd be out on your own. R: No doubt about that. K: I wouldn't pay the slightest attention to what promises you are given when the shooting starts, you are going to be there all by yourself. R: I'm sureof that. K: Now that has advantages and liabilities, but it is a precarious position. In a funny way--that is not now possible, because you can't work with me xfx having been offered this other thing. R: Of course I K: It would have been a safer relationship for both of us, because foreign affairs is still lightly insulated R: Right, but in a way, it is conceivable that-- K: You and I would work closely together anyway. R: In some respects--I might be able to do-- K: You could do more and better. R: But there-- K: Because you have a much power base. R: That is right. K: My basic view I think would be that the country is in such bad shape, and you can't really be diminished by stepping into a crisis, if it doesn't work it can't be a reflection on youx and SO much needs to be done that can only be done by senior cabinet officers that on balance I think you'd be performing a service by doing it. R: So you feel I should. Do you feel that this constitutes a problem for Nelsor K: No, I don't see why.
