11:10 a. m.
K: Jack.
M: Hello.
K: How are you?
M: O.K. How are you. Hope you are well.
K: I have had the flu but I am back on my feet.
M: Sorry to hear that. You have a lot on your plate for the next couple of weeks.
K: I certainly have and I just wanted to have a very brief chat with you.
M: Right. Do you want me to come down.
K: I don't know yet what my situation will be over the weekend. What is yours?
M: I was going up -- I have a weekend place in Connecticut but it is
always easy to get away. I am just going up for the weekend -- Sat. and
Sun. there.
K: I will call you later.
M: I had a cala the other day from Shep Stone.
K: A good man. A fine man.
M: He is bubbling over because he has been bustling around the European
scene. He says he has a lot of dope. He spent time in Bonn and in London
and it is all sort of preparatory to the Feb. 11 business. I am having lunch
with him today. He sent me a long letter. He says he has a lot of under-
cover chatter he has heard from the second and third rounds of the Foreign
Offices as to what the European attitude should be towards this thing.
He says they are also in shambles. It is in ruins there -- the United
Europea business. I might pick up something.
K: The basic problem we are having is that the French are doing in the
energy field what they did in the Atlantic Declaration and everything else.
This time no one can say we did not consult. No one can say we were
not generous. We want nothing from them but the same as in the Marshall
Plan -- cooperation on the structure. We are reaching the point now where
we feel if it does not work we will have to take on the French in an all out
confrontation. It will hurt the Community. We cannot have the Community
organized against us as XIX anti-American.
