-3- K: No. G: That never took off. K: No, we canceled that. G: I see. Is it because there was just no point. K: There was no point. We knew what the facts were. mean, everyone knows what it is. G: Yeah, and is the severance in the British government at all helpful or even more problematical? K: Well, in the short term it's helpful. In the long term it will be more problematical. G: Yeah. And the Germans are just continuing to say, we don't know what the argument is about. K: That's right. They're waffling all over the place. G: Yeah. And why essentially? Just too worried about the French, or just a feeling let's not rock this boat as well as SO many others? K: I think that and the emotional need of the French. The French are beyond my understanding. DeGaulle I understood. G: Yeah. Well the other day at the West European Studies this man Bahr who used to be the head of the French Delegation to the Common Market was there. He began to talk about the difference in generations and about the fact that the new generation doesn't understand things. So, when it came to questions, I mean the whole thing was an unbelievable performance. For example, among other things, he lashed out at the Dutch in response to a question. I think the question either from Kimmelberger or Leonchev. In a fashion, you cannot imagine the "[speaks in French. ]" On and on this way. But then I asked him, I mean, he went on and on talking about difference in generations. I said you sound positively . I said after all, this is all that he's talking about. But what would you have to do if you were an American to prove that the object is not simply to dominate you. G: He said you would have to behave differently than you are now behaving.
