-5- K: I mean the very people who were accusing us of being warmongers, insensitive, immoral, and 5 thousand other things, now think we are not tough enough on the Russians. G: Absolutely, but this is what it's all about. K: The people who thought we were too tough on the North Vietnamese say we are too soft on the Russians. G: That's right. But, Henry, how do you get anywhere in this country how do you get any of these things said? K: I think we are heading into a third republic state. We are going to become ungovernable. The press is going to be our parliament. G: What can be done? K: I don't know. G: But this is it. torn K: You know, they're not going to rest until they've/ me down. G: Well, again, and you know some people imagine that I write this way because of a personal relation with you. It has nothing to do with you. K: I know a clash with Europe won't do it because the Europeans are going to collapse on us before it's done. They haven't got the nerve to continue it. G: Again, who is going to collapse first there? K: The Germans, the Dutch. You know, we're going to kill the Davignon committee and nobody1s going to make a decision anymore without checking with us. G: Yeah, but the bigger thing, Henry, is that there is one kind of theme that is coming through from the left all the way over to the right. I mean not all the way over to the right, whatever the right is, but it is one kind of opinion and you cannot get another thing said. And again one thinks of trying to start something new, but what do you do - you can't start a new newspaper, you can't start a new journal. It would take years to build it up. But there is simply no outlet for a certain kind of opinion. What you just said about whether it's Third Republic or not, that's another matter.
