K: Yes, but his hard line as I understood it was we will support
European unity if Europe supports our Atlantic relationships, but
not in the abstract.
R: Well, you know, it is unfortunately just a bad climate. It really is
at the moment, and I think a new administration in France could
certainly help.
K: Yea, but I doubt that they will.

R: And Nelson said he had given you the statement by this young
French fellow Pierre de Monteblanc. (sp?)
K: Yes.
R: And I thought it was a little encouraging that he had said something
quite different from what Jobert has been sayingand the fact that Jobert
said it. They are feelers. I don't feel totally discouraged but I do
think it is not in a good shape at the moment.
K: Yea. But largely the result European actions.
R: I think that is probably true but its just not a good atmosphere
I'm shocked about thought if what you say about the other Americans
going around saying.
K: Yea.
R: And I don't the explanation.
K: What actions of ours have contributed to it?
R: You know, they are sorta snide remarks and retaliation ANX
and so on.
K: Well, what snide remarks?
R: Well I suppose one the sorta example was the sad fact of the report
on your talking to the ladies.
K: Ch, but God, that happened at the end of a year's process.
R: I agree, but I am just sayingthis is
