TELCON
Sen. Fulbright/ Sec. Kissinger
July 17, 1974, 4:25 p.m.
K: Mr. Chairman. I did not know whether I was supposed to
call you or you were supposed to call me.
F: I am not sure myself.
K: At any rate, I have decided to call you.
F: Since then I have talked to the members of the staff and
Senator Aiken and I am just going -- not officially -- it is not
a Committee meeting or in the name of the Committee -- just
going to invite him if convenient for him to come to coffee on
Monday.
K: That is a lot better.
F: I don't know whether that should concern "you one way or
another.
K: As I told you that is your decision and I am calling you
because at the end one of us said we would talk to each other this
afternoon and I did not know whether I was suppoed to call you.
F: That's fine. After talking to you I thought it would be wiser.
K: I think in that framework I think it is a good solution. Then
there will have been UN meeting. I am sending someone to
London, Ankara, XIXX Athens, and maybe Cyprus but I am not sure
yet who -- tonight. I will brief you on this at 6:30 I should have
called you yesterday to brief you.
F: I am SO afraid this will undermine what you have been doing in
the Middle East. I am very, very suspicious of your friend
Schlesinger. After two -three years we have pretty good evidence
they had a hand in the original coup. I mean when they first through
out Papendrean. You get the same kind of feeling. Not actively
doing it but they let it be known.
K: I can assure you we did not need this now. It is creating problems
with the Soviets.
