Mel is being considered as an advisor to Ford SO that he won't be a threat to Jerry in 1976. My friend said that Mel discussed with him at some length whether he, my friend, could live basically with you as Secretary limelighting my friend. I say my friend because I am professionally obligated not to tell you. H has been living in a very strange circumstance. I just don't think there is any problem in effect, which is what I told him. I thought it was very interesting that Mel was seeking advice on this. K: Not every advice Mel seeks is H: Jerry preside over Cabinet and WH and presumably at such time as Haig goes, Laird will come in and take over the WH. Mel is Mel and we will just have to see. H: I have no doubt, Henry, that he told you all along he would be a big wheel and he is the man who made Ford what he is. The best thing is for you to just do your business. K: I get along with Mel and you never know what the WH will be like. H: There is nothing else that can be done. K: That is exactly my view.
