Mr. Kissinger/Ambassado: Dobrynin
1:11 p.m., October 28, 1971
- 2 -
K:
The President said he hopes the reports out of Paris that
we were colluding with the Chinese to end the Vietnam war are not.
D:
It is just press interpretation. Nothing else. Not a single
word was said. They are just saying that behind the scene it shouldn't
be done.
K:
I called the President's attention to the actual text I saw that
was different from what the television reported.
D:
So many times they imply and then interpret and give in the
press and television things that were never said.
K:
The text I saw didn't say China and the United States.
D:
Without XX even looking, I am sure.
K:
I saw something in the Washington Post -- that wasn't so bad.
But what I heard on television and in the news summaries -- that is
what the President saw. I have already pointed out to the President
that what was in the Post was not so bad.
D:
The Post was much better than television.
K:
I said publicly that we will settle it with Hanoi and not
Peking.
D:
The same position taken before on this issue.
K:
I will see you at 10:00 Saturday morning. I have nothing very
world-shaking to tell you.
(mtg later changed to 1200
D:
But just as we discussed.
Sat., 10/30/71
K:
Yes.
D:
Thank you very much. Good-bye.
