Amb. Dobrynin/Mr. Kissinger
4:38 pm, December 18, 1972
D:
Yes, he is involved very much in this business and I would like him to
be mentioned.
K:
Right.
D:
Yes, Third, page number three. This is it: On this issue of
negotiations of Vietnam. The Soviet Union has played a constructive
role in these past months. I rather leave my personal --
K:
I'll take out the sentence on the constructive role.
D:
No, no; it's quite all right.
K:
Is it?
D:
No, it's quite all right. I don't quite like this second sentence: I hope
that you can exercise your influence in ways that will move us toward
a just and enduring peace. It sounds as if you are now mainly responsible.
What I am suggesting really, if you don't mind, put it something like
this one: The Soviet Union has played a constructive role in these past
months. You already have it. And then: Any further efforts of USSR
will be appreciated.
K:
Good.
D:
And then a point: And then it says:
I assure you that such a peace
remains my paramount goal, as I know it remains your goal.
K:
Good.
D:
And that's everything then.
K:
Very well.
D:
I think it will be better.
K:
Good.
D:
And nothing on the 4th, nothing on the 5th. I think it's all right
