The President/Mr. Kissinger Sunday, July 12, 1970 3 Don't you think? K: Of course, they close about three weeks early. P: But you know. There really is a death wish, isn't it. K: The American intellectual community has an investment in defeat. P: Why, isn't that awful? K: For a number of reasons. First, of all they predicted it. Second because they are afraid that if this succeeds other things like it might be tried. Thirdly, because they so distrust this country that they sort of thrive on the errors (malerrors ?). P: Well they only trust what, themselves and their brillance? Good God, you put them in charge of anything have you every seen Look at this bastard Heard, put him in charge of something he comes up with nothing. Absolute dribble. dribble. I'll tell you about the intellectual community. I used to have great respect for the professors but I have none now. Because they never come up with anything. They never have any damn guts. I have a hell of a lot more respect for George Meaney than I do for the President of Harvard. (or some school) Don't you. K: Oh no comparison. The labor people have had to learn that words alone do not achieve objectives and they have had a very hard school. But the P: I have a certain intuition you know, my intuitions are seldom wrong because I have been around a long time but I have an intuition that the Cambodian thing came out better than we could have dreamed - look, the Chinese didn't intervene and we didn't put the Russians and Chinese together. I think you ought to have a backgrounder sometime and point that out. That these are the things that the intelligencia wrote - the State Department and others predicted - the Chinese would intervene, the Chinese and Russians would be pushed together and another thing that we would have huge casualities, that Cambodia would fall and that the etc. Every prediction has proved wrong Henry, emeryone. Why don't you Have you ever told anybody in those direct terms. K: Never in a large meeting but I'll P: It doesn't nxex.x have to be a large meeting. Tell it to somebody who is really writing it and will get it out. And will say you know those who commented on Cambodia probably would like to go back and burn their columns. Use that phrase. They all proved wrong didn't they.
