TELECON (Tape)
The President/Mr. Kissinger
Wednesday evening, February 17, 1971
(11:10 p.m.)
K:
Mr. President.
P:
Henry, I was just calling you at the German Embassy in
order to impress the damn Germans.
K:
Oh, I had just left weren't you nice.
P:
I was just going to tell you, though, I had the military reception
and, by God, you know, after seeing these wonderful guys go through
strong, straight and their lovely wives. The men, of course, would
brown-nose, but the wives are saying
I said some nice things
about the military and how hard it was to be a real leader in this period
when you didn't have the country behind you -- how it would be hard
in peacetime, and that they were the men that were responsible for the
morale. The leaders were the ones that make morale and SO forth.

proud of your leadership. 11 You know, they really were very
K:
Well, and Mr. President, they mean that deeply. The military
were losing faith in themselves. They were getting to be the outcasts
and if you imagine what would have happened in a Democratic adminis-
tration. And that is what you are now, in a way, taking all this anguish
for.
P:
But I also felt I came to this conclusion, by God, Henry, we

General Stillwell was there -- you remember
Stillwell?
K:
Oh, yes. Big Stillwell. Yes, he's G-3 of the Army.
P:
Well, I hope you are keeping in touch with him. He's a very
bright fellow.
K:
Very ;good.
P:
Very tough. He told me in 1966 -- he showed me we ought to
cut that Trail; you know he's a helluva hawk. Sometime you might
just have him case the thing or maybe have Haig do it.
K:
No, maybe
I know him quite well. I'll have him come over
and just talk to him about it.
