K: Enthusiasm. I -
P: You told him all the hazards and everything.
K: I told him all the hazards and I painted it - I said look we are putting
our chips on two South Vietnamese divisions, we don't know whether .
how good they will be, they have never had a really rough opposition,
although we think they are the best divisions they've got. He said
well if they can't do it it's better to find it out now. And then I said when
I was all through, I said, now the first thing before I ask you to do something
is to find out what you think of it. And he said are you insulting me. This
is tremendous. The courage of this President, he said. He was lyrical
and he said he is going right up to the press gallery on Monday morning.
We can write the speech for him if we want to. Give him talking point S.
He'll line up others. He gave me the names of some democrats. He
said it would be better if MacGregor approached them but if our judgment
was the somebody else - that he would appracch them he'll do it.
P: Well, good, good.
K: And he couldn't have been more enthusiastic.
P: Good. I suppose the things that appealed to him were the fact that
there were no American ground forces but he didn't bother him that we
might have to use some air power.
K: I told him that even there might be some troop lift. That doesn't
both him.
P: That's good.
K: Of course, actually, if the resistance is light we might never have to
go to the troop lift.
R: XXXXXXXX6XX I know.
K: For example, in the Chup operation we haven't used it yet.
P: That's still going well. Well, of course, they have only been there
two days but
K: But they are already - now they have had some resistance but they've
done well. They are playing it very low in order not to make Lon Nol's
life tough.
P: Good.
