TELCON (TAPE)
Ambassador Dobrynin
Brought in 3/26/71
10:00 p.m., March 24, 1971
K:
Anatoliy.
D:
Hello, Henry. I hope you are having a quiet evening.
K:
Well, what does your intelligence tell you? No, I am having
a quiet evening.
D:
Yeah, I hope so. Well, I received an answer from my Minister.
First, he would like me to tell you that our Ambassador has very strict
instructions never to mention or never to mention confidential dinners.
It's just confirmation for your information. He has strictest instructions
never to mention it. He hasn't mentioned it to his associates in no
connection at all.
K:
Yes.
D:
So this is the first thing. Second, our Ambassador there, he
dropped his request about meetings with your Ambassador for tomorrow.
K:
Oh, he has.
D:
Yes, and he is saying that technically he is not prepared to have it
at all.
K:
Right.
D:
So this is what they would like me to tell you.
K:
Well, I appreciate that. We had in the meantime accepted it,
but it's all right.
D:
Huh?
K:
Our Ambassador had in the meantime accepted seeing him.
D:
But I received -- you see he tells you that he is sorry and --
K:
That's fine, that's the best way of doing it.
D:
So there will be no meeting tomorrow.
K:
That's the best way of doing it.
