Mr. Kissinger/Joe Sisco
Brought in 3/15/71
- 2 -
K:
Well, or why they couldn't say, give them two months and after that,
we'll hit them with you, or anything?
S:
Or something. We'll see what happens.
K:
Because, actually, tactically it's stupid of them. They would have
had the Israelis completely in the wrong if they had gone along with the communique.
S:
Yeah; well, we'll see. If they stick with the de facto ceasefire, they'll
still be in reasonably good shape, but not as good shape as they would have been
with a good-sized formal extension.
K:
Yeah.
S:
All right, Henry.
K:
Joe, you and the Secretary got us seven months of a ceasefire and the
basis for a longer one.
S:
Yeah. Boy, I'd like to have another seven, wouldn't you?
K:
Sure, but I don't think they are going to start shooting right away.
S:
No, I don't either.
K:
And I think we'll all have to look at it, stick together
S:
I love that Israeli report that came in today where the IDF people were
saying,
'you know, after seven months, we can't keep these pilots interested.
K:
Oh, really.
S:
This is the Isreelis.
K:
I didn't see it.
S:
Isn't that wonderful?
K:
Oh, Jesus. Nothing like a little war to keep things active.
S:
That's right. All right, Henry, I'll be in touch with you in the morning.
Let's hope that this doesn't happen, but we have a statement ready that I think
the Secretary would issue which deplore the killings in very strong language in
case it occurs. And I've just sent out a telegram suggesting that the Turks
put out on the radio right away
They know the kidnappers, and we've just
suggested that they reveal publicly the names of the kidnappers and to announce
